What Are Tents Made of?

Camping tent fabric can be formed with many materials including cotton (canvas), nylon, polyester, and felt. Cotton absorbs water, and if wet can become very heavy and unwieldy, but wet cotton is more waterproof than dry cotton. Polyesters and nylon are much brighter than cotton, and do not absorb much water; with multiple layers they can be very waterproof, but they can bend and break over time because of slow chemical collapse caused by UV light. Since sewing makes small holes in the tent fabric, it is important that all possible seams are sealed up in order to block wear and tear.

Rain resistance is measured as a hydrostatic head in millimeters. This shows the pressure of the water necessary on the fabric to penetrate it. heavy wind or claimant rain has higher pressure than light rain. Standing on one groundsheet increases the pressure on underlying water. Fabric with a hydrostatic head of 1000 millimeters or smaller is regarded as shower-resistant, if 1500 millimeters, then they are normally good for summer camping. Year-round tents are usually at least 2000 millimeters, while those for extreme conditions are frequently around 3000. Ground sheets are generally 5000 millimeters or more.

Backpacking Tents

Many tent manufactures indicate the capacity by such phrases like '3 berth' or '2 berth'. These numbers indicate how many people the manufacturer thinks can fit into a tent with sleeping bags, comfortably. These numbers do not leave for any personal property or luggage such as inflatable mattresses, camp beds, etc. They also average out height considerations. Experience indicates that Camping can be more comfortable if the actual number of people is less than specified by the manufacturer by 1 or even two people. Tents can be waterproofed even more than by putting a tarp over the top and anchoring it with sticks and rocks. This is easily established; and easily shifted.

A Dual Battery System For Your Camper Trailer Or Caravan

If you have a caravan, Camper Trailer or RV you might often want to take it off the beaten track and get down and dirty with nature. I'm talking about the wilderness experience; selecting a campsite that offers little in the way of services - especially electrical power. In these cases you will have to rely on your battery power, and if you plan on staying a few days and still want the convenience of light, fans, radio and maybe DVD player, etc, you will need to boost your power reserves somehow. In this article I will discuss how you can accomplish that. It may not suit everyone's needs or pocketbook, but if it gives you food for thought it will be a good start.

First off let's have a look at some battery facts. There are three main types of battery, conventional wet cell, deep cycle, and AGM, and left to right reads from least to most expensive. The conventional type battery is usually found under your vehicle hood and has to provide a heavy current surge to start your engine. These batteries are not intended to be deep cycled and will have a very limited lifetime if exposed to that. Deep Cycle batteries are not meant for heavy current drains but can be discharged to lower levels. These are usually found as auxiliary batteries in a vehicle or caravan. Both of these battery types need to be vented to the open air because they can generate explosive gases during the charge/discharge cycles. Also bear in mind that batteries do not like being discharged and will rapidly deteriorate if repeatedly discharged below about 50% of their capacity. So, if you have either of these batteries with a 100 Ampere Hour rating, you only really have 50 Ampere Hours of capacity. That is the rule of thumb you should use. Now add to this the fact that if you are charging from a vehicle alternator, the electrics in the charging system will only charge the battery to around 80% of its capacity. This means that potentially you may only have a usable 40 Ampere Hours.

Backpacking Tents

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries on the other hand are in my opinion the battery of choice. They last longer than the other types. They are sealed and so can be stored just about anywhere, even on their side if you want. All they require is venting to atmosphere. Because of their construction these batteries charge faster and at a lower voltage so will charge closer to that magic 100% of capacity when using conventional chargers. They can also be occasionally discharged below the 50% threshold without long term damage. Consequently an AGM battery will last longer if treated well (typically 8 to 10 years). Now the bad news. They are more expensive than conventional batteries.

In my pop-top camper trailer I use two 110 Ampere Hour AGM batteries wired in parallel. This gives me at full charge, a usable 110 Ampere Hours (220 AH / 2). This preserves the life of my batteries and provides me plenty of power, plus a small margin if I need it in emergencies. The camper is fitted with a "smart charger" so that when I am connected to mains power the batteries will charge close to 100% capacity. I also charge the batteries from the vehicle alternator when traveling and this requires some safeguards - you do not want to discharge your starter battery below its operational level, so a battery isolator to protect it is essential.
I have used this system on several occasions for extended stay camps and had plenty of power for lighting, water pump, radio/CD player, TV/DVD player and so on. You can work out your battery drain by identifying all the appliances you want to run, what their current draw is multiplied by the use time.

Tarp Shelters For Ultralight Backpackers

Why use tarp shelters? The biggest reason ultralight backpackers use them is to reduce pack weight. The lightest tent you can find will be close to three pounds. Some of the newest ultralight tarps weigh just seven ounces.

Weight isn't the only advantage of tarp shelters, though. They also give you room to move, and you can easily look around. You can quickly take them down when you're ready to go. If it's wet, just shake it off and it will fit in an outside pocket of your backpack. Even if they were the same weight, I'd still prefer a tarp over a tent for most trips.

Backpacking Tents

The lightest of my own tarp shelters weighs 16 ounces with all the strings. That seems heavy now, when I look at the new ultralight tarps out there. Integral Designs Sil Tarp 5' x 8', for example, weighs just 7 ounces.

The Bozeman Mountain Works Stealth 0 Catenary Ridgeline Ulralight Backpacking Tarp weighs an amazing 5.7 ounces. With a name like that, you know it has to be expensive. Of course, almost any backpacking tarp will be lighter - and cheaper - than the lightest tents out there.
How To Use Tarp Shelters
You'll probably need a bigger tarp than you think. A seven-foot roof may seem like it will cover your six-foot body well enough, until a blowing rain soaks your feet. Proper use is even more important than size, though.
Pitch the low side into the wind. Keep all sides low if a storm is coming. Evenly tighten guy lines. Use rocks, trees, trekking poles and whatever else helps. Pitch the tarp tightly, to keep it from flapping in the wind too much, which can loosen the strings or cause the tarp to tear.
If you haven't used tarp shelters before, experiment until you can quickly set up in several different enviroments. Bring lightweight stakes, until you learn how to use sticks and trees and rocks. No stakes means less weight to carry. I've always found something to use, even up high on the tundra.
You might have to treat the seams with a sealant occasionally, or at least when you first buy your tarp. Buy seam-sealer anyplace that sells tarps and tents. You'll need string or cord of some sort for tie-downs. I put varying lengths around the tarp, so I can untie and use the long ones where I need them. Sometimes that tree will be a little too far away.
I use 4' by 7' pieces of plastic for groundsheets. They're opened-up giant garbage bags that weigh 2 ounces. They're disposable, but I've used one for a week in the Rockies, and they're cheap and easy to replace. Whatever you use, lay your bag on it, to be sure you'll have room. You don't want to be touching the wet ground just because you moved a little. On the other hand, if it's too big it will catch rain out near the edge of the tarp, and funnel it back to you.
Mosquitos keep a lot of ultralight backpackers from using tarp shelters. Repellant is a partial solution, as is using the tarp only when it isn't too buggy. A headnet helps, but keeping the rest of your body covered when it's warm isn't pleasant. Pitch camp in a high, breezy place and you'll have fewer bug problems.
There are also mesh shelters you can pitch under your tarp. The lightest I've seen weighs 1 pound, 7 ounces. With a 7-ounce tarp, you'd be under 2 pounds for a shelter, and it comes with a floor, so you don't have to bring a groundsheet. Ultralight tarps and tarp shelters, by the way, weigh less than 20 ounces, a standard I just invented, but it seems reasonable.

A medium-sized backpack will often be your most used pack. For carrying daypack loads, tactical loads, travel gear, and perhaps a very light overnight load the Kelty Redwing is one of the best. It is Nutnfancys reference backpack in this this category (2000-3500 cubic inches, internal frame). Also notable is the excellent GoLite Continuum backpack also discussed. While these designs have been updated or discontinued, a review of their features can equip you with some shopping tips for similarly capable daypacks. The Redwing is a long-enduring design that is constantly being updated by Kelty and remains popular for good reasons: convenient panel loading, strong zippers and fabric, comfortable suspension, hydration compatible, behind-pocket (flow-thru) item carry, subdued colors, mesh backpanel, pefect pocket designs, and outstanding durability. Few packs match all these features although some may be lighter. One such pack was the GoLite Continuum (discontinued, look for similar models). While lacking convenient panel loading, this Continuum does save a pound in carry weight while still offering some waterproof pockets, good ventilation, side item carry (like fishing poles, rifles), mesh pockets, good (albeit spartan) suspension, hydration pouch, and a great OD color. Lightweight Two Person Tents For Backpacking

A 2 person tent that has the label "ultralight" doesn't always mean that it is especially when it weighs more than four pounds. The problem is, people don't know what "lightweight" really means for a tent and so assume what the manufacturer says is true. For a long time they've been lightening up their tents a little bit and calling them "lightweight" or even worse "ultra-lightweight". Some even win awards from outdoor magazines.

The truth is, only a few of them can really be called lightweight. A lot are not suitable for lightweight backpacking. The reason for this is probably because big tent manufacturers don't regard ultralight gear as having a big enough market and so focus less in that area. But all that is changing because of the increasing trend in ultralight backpacking.

Backpacking Tents

The standard for "lightweight" vary whether it is double-walled, single-walled or floorless. Here I'm just going to cover three-season tents because in my opinion the extra weight that comes with four-season tents are almost always unnecessary. Lightweight two person tents can weigh as little as two pounds, some even less. When I say "weight", I mean the whole weight of the tent including the poles and stakes. The "trail weight" you see on the labels usually don't include at least the stakes.

Double-Wall Tents
The maximum weight for a lightweight, double-wall two person tent is currently 4 pounds for it to be considered as lightweight. If you want the lightest, there are tents in this category that weigh just a bit above two pounds (as light as some "lightweight" bivy sacks). The bulk of the weight saving, like in most tents, is from the fabric and design. Lightweight poles (and less number of poles) and stakes also helps. Most ultralight tents employ a one pole design.
"Lighter" almost always mean smaller and the lightest 2 person tents are small indeed. Even though a person taller than 6 feet can often fit inside, there won't be much space inside and condensation, like in bivy sacks, is very likely. This problem is addressed by improved ventilation (that flows through the tent) like in some quality tents.
Quality and lightweight, of course, means a higher price.
Single-Wall Tents
The single-wall tent is one of the most recommended tent for lightweight backpacking. Now they're even lighter and fits well in the ultra-light category. The maximum weight for a lightweight single-wall 2 person tent is 3 pounds. Currently the lightest in this category only weigh around 18 ounces. They're lighter than most one person tents and even tarps. A tent like this would use a very thin fabric so special care might be a requirement.
Floorless Tents
This can be both double-walled and single walled tents. The absence of a floor reduces the weight of a tent significantly. The maximum weight for these tents to be considered lightweight is two pounds for a 2 person tent. As a substitute for the floor most ultralight hikers use a ground sheet which only weigh about 1 or 2 ounces and can be cut according to size. If you really want to backpack as light as possible, this is one of the best way to go.

For the true outdoorsman, only tenting will do. Forget the RV. Getting in touch with nature means leaving the microwave and HDTV at home. There's nothing better than listening to crickets chirping in the stillness while you're inside a great canvas tent. Whether your tent is a pop-up or other type, tenting is one of the best ways to commune with the environment.

Unfortunately, some people still have the outdated image of the bulky, circus-style tents of yesterday. Steel rods and bulky sheer weight of the canvas at all, some try to discourage camping. Fortunately, technology has come a long way to camp. Tents today are lightweight, but sturdy. It should also not be a scientist to put up. Pop-up tents are easy to use and affordable. They can also be installed by one person.

Backpacking Tents

Pop-up tents are just what the name suggests. Poles are erected from the tissuechannels. They're so simple, in fact, that they are often referred to as "self-erecting" tents. The poles are typically made of light, flexible materials, making them nearly foolproof to work with.

Pop-up tents are designed to be extremely compact. The poles usually break down to shorter lengths. They may separate completely to create shorter sections. When choosing a pop-up tent, there are two main factors to consider: size and camping conditions. First, decide on size. How many people will likely be sleeping in the tent at one time? It's important to read labels carefully. Pop-up tents may sleep anywhere from one to eight people. The label will tell you exactly how many people it was made to hold. However, you may need to make some adjustments. For example, a tent that says it sleeps "four" generally refers to four average-sized adults. A family of two adults and three small children may still fit comfortably inside. Similarly, a tent for "four" may not be big enough for four tall men. Always check the dimensions of the tent along with the number of people it sleeps to get a more accurate gauge of size.
Next, in what type of conditions will you be using your tent? For example, if you frequently camp on windy mountaintops, you should avoid hoop tents. Hoop tents may not be strong enough to withstand a powerful wind. Instead, they are ideal for backyard camping or for use in enclosed campgrounds. Ridge tents are a good choice for backpacking trips, provides the flexibility without bulk. For trips when space is not a problem, frame tents are an excellent choice. They work well for families and have a lot of interior space.

If you are going out on an extensive backpacking trip, then you will have to carefully consider your food provisions. Food and water are essential aspects of staying energized on a backpacking trip, so understanding the best ways to prepare and pack food can really help you plan a good menu.

Weight is always a concern with backpacking food, since you'll be carrying everything on your back. You should try to bring food that is lightweight, durable, and easy to cook out in the wild.

Backpacking Tents

Some backpackers like to cook elaborate meals with fresh ingredients, particularly on short trips, while others carry the gear and take the time to catch fish or hunt small game for food. However, especially for long expeditions, most backpackers' food criteria are more or less the same: high energy content (particularly protein), with long shelf life, and low mass and volume.

Ordinary household foods brought on backpacking trips include cheese, bread, sausage, fruit, peanut butter, and pasta. Popular foods for snacks include trail mix, easily prepared at home; convenient and nutritious energy bars; and chocolate and other forms of candy, which provide quick energy and flavor. Traditional outdoor food includes dried foods like jerky or pemmican, and also products like oatmeal (which can also be consumed raw in emergency situations).
Another common variety of special backpacking food is freeze-dried food, which can be quickly reconstituted by adding hot water. One kind of special food is Meal Ready-to-Eat (MRE), which originated from the United States military. They make excellent food for several reasons; they do not need to be rehydrated nor heated or cooked in any manner. They are very durably packaged. A single MRE contains a full meal, complete with snack and desert, and they offer a great deal of variety in each meal.
To make certain water is safe to drink you should filter it and add a water treatment to it. Iodine tablets are popular because they are easy to use, but they can result in the water having a weird taste. A solution to the taste problem is to add sugar free drink mix to the water. If you need to filter water due to debris it has in it, you can use cheesecloth. You could use a clean bandanna for a makeshift filter.
You should always consider the nature of the trip when you choose your backpacking food. Hot meals are much more important in cold climates, for example.
